Washington, D.C. — The House Republicans' proposed Legislative Branch Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2024, passed by the House Appropriations Committee and awaiting full consideration by the U.S. House, includes a provision that requires all unspent money from the Members’ Representational Allowance (MRA) to be allocated towards debt and deficit reduction.
Member of the U.S. House, Rep. Webster, expressed his support for this measure, highlighting his own longstanding commitment to fiscal responsibility. "I’m pleased to see that House Republicans are on the verge of adopting something I’ve been voluntarily doing since I was elected," said Rep. Webster. "Each year, I have saved money from my Congressional Office Budget and have returned over $4.5 million to date."
Furthermore, Rep. Webster shared an additional step he takes to demonstrate his dedication to financial prudence. "Additionally, every year I deliver a personal check to the Bureau of Fiscal Service at the Treasury Department to roll back my salary to the 2008 amount," he explained. "Although it is a small step given the trillions of dollars the federal government spends, it is a step in the right direction."
This proposal by House Republicans aims to utilize unused funds to address the pressing issue of debt and deficit reduction. While the federal government's expenditures amount to trillions of dollars, this initiative signifies a positive stride towards responsible financial management.
