Today, the U.S. House of Representatives approved H.R. 35, known as the Agent Raul Gonzalez Officer Safety Act. This legislation, supported by Congressman Daniel Webster from Clermont, makes it a federal crime to evade or flee a U.S. Border Agent or any law enforcement official working with or under the command of the U.S. Border Patrol.
Congressman Webster stated, "We must ensure that those who recklessly endanger our Border Patrol agents, law enforcement officers, and communities are held accountable." He emphasized that current laws do not classify fleeing from Border Patrol as a federal offense, which he described as a loophole exploited by criminal illegal aliens. The new bill aims to establish clear penalties and grant border agents and law enforcement officers the authority necessary to maintain order and security at national borders.
The legislation is named in honor of Raul Gonzalez, a Border Patrol agent who lost his life while pursuing a vehicle carrying illegal immigrants in Texas. Additionally, H.R. 35 stipulates that criminal aliens who evade law enforcement will be deemed inadmissible, removable, and ineligible for immigration relief options such as asylum.
