Today, President Trump signed the Laken Riley Act into law. The legislation, supported by Congressman Daniel Webster (R-FL), mandates the Secretary of Homeland Security to arrest and detain illegal aliens who commit theft, burglary, larceny, and shoplifting offenses.

“President Trump’s signature on this legislation delivers on the promise to put the safety of the American people first,” said Rep. Webster. “The Laken Riley Act equips law enforcement with the tools needed to hold criminal illegal aliens accountable. This law is an important step in protecting our communities and ensuring that no family has to endure the heartbreak that Laken Riley’s family has faced.”

The act is named after Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student who was murdered by Jose Antonio Ibarra, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela. Ibarra had been arrested multiple times for various offenses but was not detained by ICE, highlighting gaps in enforcement.

“There’s more work to be done and I am committed to working with my colleagues and the Trump Administration to secure our borders, enforce our laws, and keep our communities safe,” Rep. Webster concluded.
