The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the Laken Riley Act, a bill that mandates the Secretary of Homeland Security to arrest and detain illegal immigrants who commit offenses such as theft, burglary, larceny, and shoplifting.
Representative Daniel Webster expressed his support for the legislation, stating, "My Republican colleagues and I made a commitment to secure our borders and hold criminals accountable." He further noted that the act will equip law enforcement with necessary tools to enforce the law and ensure community safety. The bill now awaits President Trump's signature to become law.
The Laken Riley Act was introduced by Representative Mike Collins from Georgia following the murder of his constituent, Laken Riley. Riley was a 22-year-old nursing student who was killed on February 22, 2024. The accused, Jose Antonio Ibarra, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, had been arrested multiple times before Riley's death but was not detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
