Florida Congressman Daniel Webster has voted in favor of H.R. 23, the Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act, which aims to impose sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC) for what are considered unwarranted actions against the United States and its allies.
"I voted again to pass this legislation to send a clear message to the ICC," stated Rep. Webster. "The United States will defend the sovereignty of our country and will protect our allies against illegitimate attacks by imposing sanctions against ICC officials associates."
In 2020, then-President Trump issued an Executive Order sanctioning any ICC officials or associates who investigated U.S. citizens, service members, or allies that do not recognize the ICC's authority, such as Israel.
However, these sanctions were revoked in 2021 by President Biden, allowing the ICC to potentially target U.S. citizens and allies.
The situation escalated in May 2024 when ICC prosecutor Karim Khan announced plans to seek arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli defense officials.
Rep. Webster noted that although House Republicans passed similar legislation in June 2024, it was not considered by the Democrat-majority Senate at that time.
