On Saturday, the Eliminating Barriers to Rural Internet Development Grant Eligibility (E-BRIDGE) Act was signed into law. The legislation, co-introduced by Congressman Daniel Webster, is part of the Thomas R. Carper Water Resources Development Act of 2024.

Congressman Webster emphasized the significance of broadband access for distressed communities, stating: “We know broadband impacts the ability of distressed communities to attract jobs and businesses across a host of other industries, including healthcare and energy sectors.” He expressed his satisfaction with the new law, saying, “I’m thrilled that this commonsense bill is now law, removing unnecessary hurdles and helping more Americans get connected.”

The E-BRIDGE Act aims to expand broadband access while ensuring existing rural broadband providers are not adversely affected. Congressman Webster noted that these providers are often small businesses that have invested significant resources to serve rural areas.
