Florida Congressman Daniel Webster has cast his vote in favor of the FAFSA Deadline Act, officially known as H.R. 8932. This legislation mandates that the Department of Education make the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) accessible to students by October 1 of the year preceding their expected enrollment.
"Students and families should have timely access to the resources they need for higher education," stated Rep. Webster. "This legislation simplifies and streamlines the financial aid process, moving the FAFSA deadline to October 1, well in advance of the school year, allowing families to make better-informed financial decisions."
In December 2020, Congress tasked the U.S. Department of Education with implementing a more streamlined FAFSA application to facilitate easier access for American students. However, under the Biden-Harris Administration, there have been consistent delays in meeting deadlines, coupled with errors that hindered students from submitting necessary information. A Government Accountability Office study highlighted that 430,000 fewer students submitted applications for the 2024-2025 academic year.
The newly passed bill aims to provide clarity and requires that FAFSA applications be fully operational by October 1 each year.
