Florida Congressman Daniel Webster, along with U.S. Representative Tim Walberg and 11 other House colleagues, have requested information from Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona regarding Tutor.com's ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The members expressed concerns about the potential national security risks associated with Tutor.com, which was purchased by Chinese-owned Primavera Capital Group in 2022.
"This connection raises serious questions about data privacy, security protocols, and the potential exploitation of sensitive information," the members wrote in their letter to Secretary Cardona. They emphasized the importance of evaluating the implications of this partnership, particularly in the context of student privacy.
The letter, co-signed by Representatives including Elise Stefanik, Lisa McClain, and Dan Crenshaw, requested answers on what steps the Department of Education is taking to assess the national security risks of Tutor.com. The members also inquired about any communication between the Department and Tutor.com or Primavera Capital Group to address these concerns.
The concerns stem from the fact that Tutor.com collects sensitive data on its users, including names, locations, and recordings of tutoring sessions. With Primavera Capital Group being Chinese-owned and having ties to ByteDance, the members highlighted the potential threat to the American people's security.
The letter from Congressman Webster and his colleagues underscores the need for a thorough evaluation of the partnership between Tutor.com and Primavera Capital Group to ensure the protection of user data and national security interests.
