Florida Congressman Daniel Webster, R-Clermont, has released a statement explaining his vote on H.Res.878 - Providing for the expulsion of Representative George Santos from the United States House of Representatives.
Webster begins by acknowledging the seriousness of expelling a member of Congress, stating, "A vote to expel a member of Congress is a serious matter." He goes on to explain that he has voted against previous attempts to expel Rep. George Santos due to a lack of due process.
However, Webster points out that the House Ethics Committee has now completed their investigation, and Congressman Santos has refused multiple opportunities to provide evidence or testimony clearing his name. Webster emphasizes that the evidence presented by the bipartisan Ethics Committee clearly outlines numerous instances where Congressman Santos broke the law.
Webster highlights the rarity of such investigations and expulsions, stating, "Such an investigation and clear evidence is rare – as are expulsions." He emphasizes the honor and solemn responsibility of serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, as recognized by the Founding Fathers in Article 1, Section 5 of the U.S. Constitution.
Given the overwhelming evidence that Congressman Santos has violated federal law and his refusal to resign despite these facts, Webster felt obligated to vote for his expulsion.
Webster's statement provides a clear and firm stance on his decision to support the expulsion of Congressman George Santos.
