Lake-Sumter State College issued the following announcement on Feb 10.
In honor of Black History Month, we'd like to highlight, Hubert O. Dabney, an athletic director at Leesburg High school. He spent 47 years coaching and teaching thousands of students in Lake and Sumter counties. In 1954, Dabney convinced the city to build a pool for the black community, where he devoted 35 years teaching residents how to swim.
He became the first African American to be inducted into the Florida Athletic Coaches Association's Hall of Fame in 1982. He served on the board of directors of the Florida Interscholastic Athletic Association, governing body of African American athletics in high schools, from 1932-to 1968.
"His influence extends not only into the black community but throughout Leesburg and Lake County. He always instilled the idea of success and that one can achieve by simply pulling themselves up by their bootstraps and going forward,” stated David Connelly, mayor of Leesburg.
