The United States House of Representatives has passed H.R. 22, known as the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. This legislation, cosponsored by Congressman Daniel Webster from Clermont, aims to enforce stricter voter registration procedures for federal elections by requiring states to confirm citizenship via documentary proof.
“It’s simple, only American citizens should have a voice in American elections,” said Congressman Webster. He further emphasized, “An honest and secure election is a hallmark of our republic, with the right to vote serving as a privilege and responsibility for American citizens.” The legislation is framed as a measure to reinforce election integrity by mandating identification and proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration.
The SAVE Act mandates states to also clear their voter rolls of non-citizens and hold election officials accountable if they fail to enforce citizenship proof requirements. It provides multiple options for proving citizenship, utilizing documentation similar to that necessary for obtaining a REAL ID.
